In December, Avioxx directors conducted a visit to Protos Energy Park in Cheshire. This visit marked a significant step towards establishing Avioxx's inaugural sustainable aviation fuel production facility at this strategic location.

Cheshire is a prominent historical industrial centre and one of the largest in the UK. It boasts a rich legacy in chemical manufacturing, being the birthplace of the British chemical industry. Leveraging the county’s chemical history and local talent and community, the Avioxx team have strategically set their sights on Protos for their first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant, with an abundance of existing infrastructure and facilities nearby that are readily available to support the production and distribution of SAF.

Protos’s location in Cheshire situates it at the centre of innovative technologies, connecting energy-intensive businesses with sources of low-carbon energy. The park’s advantageous proximity to key transport hubs, including the Manchester Ship Canal, Manchester Airport (the third busiest airport in the UK) and Liverpool John Lennon Airport positions it as the ultimate destination for both domestic and international SAF markets.

International SAF targets currently call for a 10% blend of SAF to fossil-based Jet A1 fuel. Avioxx have potential collaborative partners near the site capable of supporting the blending needs of Avioxx SAF. Also within 2 miles of the Protos site is the Stanlow Refinery, providing convenient access to established fuel distribution networks including the Exolum Pipeline System.

Beyond the logistical advantages, being in the heart of the UK’s chemical industry, the area is home to the country’s most experienced chemical engineers and other skilled professionals in the industry. Building Avioxx's production site at Protos is anticipated to attract a strong talent pool, a vital factor to ensure the success of the company’s sustainable aviation fuel development program.

The combination of historical significance, infrastructural accessibility, and talent attraction makes Protos Energy Park an ideal location for Avioxx's future SAF production facility. In addition to Protos, Avioxx plan to survey several other locations in the coming months to find the most suitable sites for their first production plant and beyond. The firm is currently working towards a 5,000 tonne-per-year capacity plant, which will pave the way for their first commercial scale plant of 32,000 tonnes-per-year. In parallel, the Avioxx engineers are developing a modular 100 tonne-per-year capacity plant for research and demonstration purposes.
